NEW E-MAIL ADDRESS - brooksftn21 @btinternet.com

Dear Friends,

Dear Former Pupils and Members of Staff, At last we are able to enjoy some brightness and sunshine, our lives are enriched by the signs of new growth and the glories of Eastertide. New life, new hope; we wish you all, good health and happiness. Our thoughts are with those of you who suffered flooding, which caused the loss of homes and possessions, one can only imagine the anguish.

Once again we are thinking about the Annual Reunion, as always it is on the 1st Sunday in July, 6"\ from 2.30 p.m. in the Hall at St Thomas Garnet School in Parkwood Road. Your Committee will be there to welcome you, provide tea, coffee, fruit squash. EILEEN HUGHES, the Treasurer, will be taking subscriptions, still only 5.00 a year.

We have an added attraction this year, see the section on the Reunion. It is disappointing that the number of paid up members is falling, other Past Pupils' Associations have had to close through lack of support, please don't let this happen to us. We need more Committee Members, it only involves 2 meetings a year, on a Friday afternoon, and helping at the Reunion.. We changed the meetings from evening to a Friday afternoon because LINDA HOOPER ( HERBERT) comes from Bristol and can spend the night with a friend", if she wishes, and MAUREEN HUNT ( DALY) comes from Wootton Bassett. We need some younger people and ideas, 3 of us are in our 80s. Please give this some thought.

We are grateful to the Head Teacher at St Thomas Garnet School, Mrs Sarah Breeze, for continuing to allow us to use the School Hall and for reserving its use for our usual day.

On behalf of The Anglo European College of Chiropractic, the Principal, Professor Thiel, is allowing us to use the big carpark on Parkwood Road, outside the former chapel and Hall.

In the past the Chairwoman has also compiled the 2 newsletters, we feel that it is time to separate the two and, after 20 years I need to hand the editor's job to someone else: please think carefully about taking on this task. The newsletters are appreciated and people renew old contacts through them, as well enjoying the bits of news which we collect through you. Please keep the news coming. Many of you are not able to attend the Reunions but the newsletters keep you in touch; the names of those who have attended are printed in the Christmas edition, so often the sight of a familiar name brings forth memories.

My sincere thanks to the Committee members, without whose support the Association would not function. I have recently spoken to our President JEAN WALSH ( HUGHES), without whose determination and hard work over the years there would be no Association. JEAN, a former pupil and member of staff, at 97 V2, is keeping fairly well, she has a good appetite and despite near blindness and deafness is mentally very alert and always interested in the Past Pupils. She sends her greetings to you all and best wishes. She would like to come to the Reunion but will have to wait and see how things are nearer the time.

A LAST MINUTE DEVELOPMENT. WE NOW HAVE TO PAY A LARGE PREMIUM FOR PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE, FOR USING THE PREMISES. WE WILL HAVE TO LOOK INTO ALL THIS FOR THE FUTURE.

Please let us know of any changes of postal address and e mail; I use the latter to update you with current news. Undelivered newsletters are usually returned but e mails just seem to disappear. Please keep the news coming.

We look forward to seeing as many as possible on SUNDAY 6TH JULY TO ENJOY A CHAT OVER A CUP OF TEA OR COFFEE.

Sincerely.

Mary Brooks

THE ASSOCIATION AND REUNION.

We feel that there is still a need and liking for a Past Pupils' Association, which keeps you in touch with former friends and members of staff. Its continuance and strength depends on you, particularly the younger people. Nowadays we have Facebook and Friends Reunited but feel that there is still a place for this link.

The Annual Reunion at St. Thomas Garnet School is a good venue to arrange a meeting with old friends. It is difficult not having the old school as a base but the site of St Thomas Garnet School, formerly our Junior School St Joseph's, right opposite the main Convent building is very full of memories.

This year we have an added attraction; RACHEL LAPWORTH (DUNK) -1979, is coming to give a short talk, at 3.30 p.m. about The Lewis Manning Hospice in the Bournemouth / Poole area. As I wrote in the Christmas Newsletter, PAST PUPIL, MARJORIE LEWIS MANNING (LLOYD) set up the Hospice in her beautiful home, after the death of her husband. RACHEL has been associated with the running of the Hospice for many years.

YOUR COMMITTEE MEMBERS ARE :- JEAN WALSH (HUGHES) - PRESIDENT MARY BROOKS (BROWNING) - CHAIR AND EDITOR OF NEWSLETTER EILEEN HUGHES - HON. TREASURER BARBARA ATKIN - SPIVEY PAMELA BLAKE (KENNARD) LINDA HOOPER (HERBERT) MAUREEN HUNT(DALY) FIONA WARD (KNOTT) MARGARET SIMPSON (ATKINS)

They keep the Association running smoothly in various ways, especially in the organisation and enjoyment of the Reunion. EILEEN keeps the finances in order throughout the year; MARGARET works hard over the Christmas period and into January, ordering the Hamper and later copying and sending Sr.PATRICIA (MACKENZIE)'S letter of thanks, to all those who contribute to the Hamper. MARGARET and her husband Norman kindly keep the membership database up to date and print the address labels for us.

We are grateful to GERALDINE NICHOLLS (MAHY) for hosting our committee meetings at her home in Southbourne. For very many years GERALDINE was a committee member and is still active in spreading the word about the association whenever she can.

All the committee members have served for many years and we badly need new, younger members, full of new ideas and enthusiasm. Please help to keep us going. Our committee meetings are 2 a year, one in early March and one in early October, on a Friday afternoon

PLEASE LET US KNOW OF ANY CHANGES TO POSTAL AND E-MAIL ADDRESSES

THE WEBSITE.

I am always pleased to receive e mails from people who have found the website and thoroughly enjoyed all the interest on it. There is a contact for me and a SEARCH so that you can obtain information about former pupils or staff members, if they have featured in any of the School magazines, which can be found there. All who find It are full of praise for the site creator, Glenn Edgeley - Long, who keeps it up to date for us. We are very grateful.

I recently had an e-mail from a man who was researching old schools in Uttoxeter, he found an entry in a 1932 Directory of The Convent of The Cross, boarding and day school for girls. The Mother Superior was Mother Theresa Butler- Bowden, other nuns there were Mother Agnes Kelly and Mother Maud Redman., in the mid 30s. I was able to tell him that those names were familiar to me and that it was indeed the same Order of Nuns.

On our website he read the excellent obituary for REVEREND MOTHER MARY KELLY, written by DOROTHY TUCKER. In it there was mention of an obituary written by Rev. MOTHER MARY KELLY in 1951 for her sister MOTHER AGNES KELLY, who died in 1948 aged 67. He kept congratulating the webmaster.
GILLIAN KAUFMAN (ROBOTHOM) also found the website recently.

Thank you GLENN.
