As I begin this Newsletter we are experiencing beautiful Autumnal weather, here in the South of England. The countryside is stunning with the reds, oranges and yellow foliage; garden plants don't know where they are, spring bulbs are beginning to emerge and blossoms are appearing months early. Warmth and brightness to store up ready for Wintry days ahead. The dark days of the Winter Solstice will be illuminated for us by the advent of The Light of the World into our lives.
May the celebration of the birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten mankind throughout the world bringing the peace so badly needed. Your Committee wishes all former pupils and members of staff a joyful, peaceful Christmastide and every blessing in 2008.
The Association continues to thrive, largely thanks to the interest and dedication of your committee and of supportive past pupils. Each year we lose a few members but also gain new ones, to whom we extend a warm welcome. Those attending this year's reunion were slightly fewer than in 2006 but it was very enjoyable nevertheless.
Judging by the number of apologies received several others would have liked to come but were prevented by other commitments. It is a busy time of the year, especially for those with children and grandchildren involved in school activities.
We are grateful to JULIE-ANNE CUTLER (MATTHEWS), the Head Teacher of St. Thomas Garnet's School, who allows us to hold our reunions in their Hall, formerly St Joseph's, the Convent's Junior Department. A list of those who came and signed the Visitors' Book can be found on the next page.
Throughout the year we have been concerned and praying for our President, JEAN WALSH (HUGHES); JEAN was a pupil and member of staff for many years, indeed is a part of the life of the Convent. More detail will be found inside this newsletter and a message from Jean, who returned to her own home on 1St November, after 5 months in Hospital and a Rehabilitation Centre.
our best wishes and a floral arrangement for her 91st birthday on 3rd November and to welcome her home. We thank God for answering our prayers.
We welcome two new members to the committee:
EILEEN HUGHES has joined us as Treasurer and THERESA McINTYRE is filling the new post of Membership Secretary, we all have reason to be grateful to them as without the work of committee members the Association would not be able to continue. This is a situation which is affecting many such groups, we feel it would be a tragedy if The Boscombe Convent Past Pupils' Association ceased to exist.
Please continue to support us. Pass on news to others and send us contributions for the newsletters. Dates for inclusion are, the end of October & mid April.
PLEASE NOTE THE NEW ADDRESS FOR SUBSCRIPTIONS. AT THE END OF THIS EDITION.
OLD BOYS of the Convent will find articles of special interest in this edition.
We are indebted to ROSANNA FOX (BREDDA) the School Secretary who, so expertly and cheerfully, prints the newsletters for us, with the patient co-operation of Head Teacher, JULIE ANNE CUTLER (MATTHEWS.)
We thank them both.
With all good wishes,
MARY BROOKS (BROWNING). Chairman and Editor.
THE REUNION 1ST JULY 2007
Although the numbers were not as great as in some previous years everyone seemed to enjoy meeting and chatting over a cup of tea.
Apologies were received from several people, it is a busy time of the year but we always have our reunion on the 1st Sunday in July; St. Thomas Garnet's School kindly reserve the Hall for us on that day. Parents and grandparents are often involved with school activities and many children make their First Holy Communion about that time too.
Apologies were received from :
TESSA WELLSTEAD (SIBETH), ANNE STARBUCK (MANNING) & SALLY JAMES(MANNING); MARIE TARRANT (BROWNE), SHEILA HART (DANAGHER), GENEVIEVE BASTO (BOND).
GEN had been over for the week of 18th June for the 80th birthday of her sister ANNE WORBY (BOND) but was unable to stay for the reunion as she had to get back to Portugal to continue her chemotherapy treatment.
A gentler drug was being used as she had been hospitalized earlier in the year, due to very bad side effects. Genevieve thanks us all for our prayers.
